DJ SEVDEE

Written by DAWNdada

7D! Bonjour & Shankage to this man right here. I had the blessings to meet 7D in the mean streets on Montreal, Canada last year. His style and skills are classic. His beats and his music are enlightening. 7D is captivating, if you’re ever in the MTL make sure you check him out live, but for those of us in the states tune into him mix shows online. Peace Peace!

What made you want to be a DJ?
Everyone in my group at the time was rapping and we needed a DJ. Sacrifice is the forfeiture of something of high value for the sake of one considered having even greater value. This is how I became a DJ.

The initial spark came from two precise songs : EPMD’s “So What Chu Sayin” and “Timz n Hood Cheks” by Smif-N-Wessun

How long have you been a DJ?
Since 1994. 14 years.

At What moment did you know this was your calling?
After my first house party, around age 15.

What DJ do you look up to? Why?
DJ Scratch (he was my introduction to scratching, a mean producer and rock the tables with NO headphones)

DJ Jazzy Jeff (the ultimate party DJ)

DJ Premier (need I say more?)

Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Caz and Kool DJ Herc for laying down the foundations.

Is this your dream job? If no then what is?
There is a lot more to accomplish, but making people dance their stress off their shoulders is a pretty good job.

Records or Serato?
Both. DJs are responsible for the technological advancements of Hip-hop. Its important for us to say actualized the various new technologies available to perform our craft and our art.

What’s your take on the industry today?
The medium through which music is shared has changed constantly over the last 50 years, but I still see the same train of thought applied by both record companies as well as artists. At the moment, my focus is on the internet.

“The names have changed but the game remains the same”

Are there any other fields in the industry you work in?
Being an independent artist, I am personally involved in all aspects of the creation process, promotion, marketing and distribution.

What’s your most embarrassing, funniest, or Worst (pick one) DJ story?
I played in a church once. Not a church basement..IN the church. It was organized by a Montreal community center in partnership with some of the best organ players (I was told) there is.

I was cutting breaks while they’d play the organ and had cats free styling in the mic. Can anyone say : ECHO!?!

It was umm….special!

What’s in your IPod?
My beats (what…) off the 2 new projects I am working on.

Favorite Record to date?
Catch A Fire by Bob Marley and the Wailers

Favorite artist?
The Most High

Song you could never here again & be happy?
Not sure I get the question.

Song I could never hear again…and still be happy : any artist with the words “Young” and “Lil” in their names have yet to impress me (yes, even him)

Song I could never hear again and ever be happy as I hear it : Bob Marley’s Waiting In Vain

What do you do when your not Ding?
Books (the BIG ones), Herbs (the GOOD ones) and Build (with the RIGHT ones)

Any Shout outs?
To all DJs, Poets, MC’s, Writers, Speakers, Singers, Painters, Dancers: ARTISTS; who stand upright and strive to produce Good works of Art. Get at me.

Quadruple Shout Out to “Peace”….where you at?
