What made you want to be a DJ?
My incredible love for music, it’s in my blood and makes me who I am. I can relate to anything through music and I can also deal with anything through music. It’s a universal language and I was excited by the possibility of being able to speak to people through music.
How long have you been a DJ?
I have been DJing for 7 years now.
At What moment did you know this was your calling?
It started out as a dream in my early middle school years but by the time I reached eighth grade I was determined to get some equipment and start practicing. The day I bought my first pair of turntables and mier, that was the moment right there. I said to myself I was going to make it happen, and do what everyone thought was far-fetched at the time. I’m blessed to be able to wake up everyday and live my dream.
What DJ do you look up to? Why?
DJs like Jazzy Jeff, who can withstand the test of time. A DJ like Jazzy Jeff who isn’t shy about evolving with the times and infusing what is current with his old school style. Besides being a pioneer and one of the original greats, he’s just as good now, (if not better) than when he was in his prime.
Records or Serato?
Well I’ve been using Serato for almost 4 years now, way before it caught on with the new generation of DJs. I can’t say that I miss carrying 4 crates of records with a few friends to every gig, but the folks at Rane have been able to reproduce the vinyl feel so close to the real thing that it opens up Pandora’s box for those REALLY creative minds, not the copycat bedroom DJs.
What’s your take on the industry today?
Today the industry is oversaturated. You have every artist running towards the same finish line, while copying each other on the way. The worst part about it is these old record label heads playing as ventriloquists to these artists, and are just letting the industry slowly die, when they should be creating a new business model to revive the industry and keep it going for another 20 years. Things are not looking good unless there is a big change soon.
What’s your Worst DJ story?
My worst DJ story was one night at Miami Live back in ‘07, the party was winding down and Lil Wayne was in attendance. Next thing I know, Wayne comes up to the booth, asks me for the mic and leans against the booth and just says to me, “Play some beats.” Me and a crowd of about 10 other club goers that were still there got to hear Wayne free styling off the top for a good 15 minutes straight while I did my own rendition of Jackin 4 Beats. The WORST part about it is that there was NO VIDEO FOOTAGE. I took a camera with me to the club every week after that !!!! One time for Abebe Lewis who shared my pain for a brief moment. LOL.
Song you could never here again & be happy?
Anything by Soulja Boy I can do without for as long as I live.
What do you do when your not DJing?
I am plotting my next move..
Any Shout outs?
