February is here and this month is very significant because this is the month that has been selected for Black History Month. Many teenagers recognize this month, but don’t understand the true meaning behind it. As teenagers, we should look beyond the title and into the actual history that created the title. What does Black History Month mean to you? How have the events that are the foundation of Black History affected you and your community? These are the questions that we should ask ourselves as young adults.

When we look back on history, we should appreciate the sacrifices that our ancestors made and value the opportunities available to African Americans today. I believe Black History Month is a great celebration for every race. The events that took place in the past have benefited people of all ethnic backgrounds. Because of these events, no one has to be concerned with who they can talk to or sit with simply because of their race. Things have become much better because of the events that took place in Black History and young America should appreciate and understand the story behind the people and events that formed the history.

As an African American young woman, I take great pride in who I am and the opportunities I have today that my ancestors were not fortunate enough to experience but fought for. I value the fact that I can have a mixed race group of friends and that I can live in my multi-cultural neighborhood and feel secure. I also appreciate and idolize great leaders of the past such as Harriet Tubman, Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X for their many courageous acts that shaped my life today. Black History Month should be the month for reflection, appreciation, and understanding of the past.

On that note, remember that Black History affects us all and should be recognized for the people, events and results that have shaped the lives of millions. I hope that my words influence everyone that reads this and that you really take into consideration the thoughts that I have brought forth.

Remember, the choices YOU make today, shape OUR world tomorrow.
